Get Out and Get Under (Hal Roach Studios, 1920)

Starring Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis

In Get Out and Get Under, a great short comedy from Lloyd, he attempts to court his future real-life wife, Mildred Davis. He is excited to present her his photograph and is also focused on his brand-new automobile. On the way, however, let’s just say he has car trouble!

Safety Last! (Hal Roach Studios, 1923)

Starring Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis

One of the most enduring photos of the silent film era is from the famous scene in Safety Last! that shows Lloyd dangling off a clock tower on a skyscraper in downtown Los Angeles. The movie’s plot involves a simple country boy who moves to the city and begins working at a department store. But a publicity stunt puts Lloyd in a precarious situation!

Adam Swanson is one of the world’s foremost performers of vintage American popular music, including ragtime, early jazz, the Great American Songbook, and more. He holds a bachelor’s in classical piano and a master’s in musicology from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He made his New York debut in Carnegie Hall at the age of nineteen, where he performed with Michael Feinstein. Adam has performed at the Cinecon Classic Film Festival in Hollywood and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as well as in Hungary, Switzerland, and Australia. He has worked with such musicians as Toronto’s John Arpin, former rock star Ian Whitcomb, and legendary 1950s recording artist Johnny Maddox, who was one of Adam’s greatest influences.
