The Black Lillies

Presented by KSUT and Henry Strater Theatre

One of the most popular bands on festival stages and concert halls in the Four Corners, The Black Lillies are regulars at Pagosa Folk’n Bluegrass and the Four Corners Folk Festival on Reservoir Hill. They’ve also appeared at the Durango Arts Center and the Dolores River Brewery.

The Black Lillies were formed in Knoxville, Tenn., in 2009 by singer-songwriter Cruz Contreras. They’ve since released four albums — Whiskey Angel in 2009, 100 Miles of Wreckage in 2011, Runaway Freeway Blues in 2013 and Hard to Please in 2015. Songs like “Two Hearts Down,” “Smokestack Lady” and “Hard to Please” have become staples on the KSUT Music Blend.

With roots in country, rock, folk, soul, blues, bluegrass and jazz, the Black Lillies appeal to a wide variety of listeners. Their albums have received heavy airplay on AAA/Americana stations (like KSUT), college radio and Top 40 country signals, while heir videos have appeared on CMT. They’ve also performed at the Grand Ole Opry, NPR’s Mountain Stage and Music City Roots.

The Black Lillies’ current lineup features Contreras (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards and mandolin), Sam Quinn (bass), Bowman Townsend (percussion), Dustin Schaefer (electric guitar), Jonathan Keeney (pedal steel) and Haley Cole (vocals).

Their lead guitarist, Dustin Schaefer, will open the show with a solo set. Past attendees of the Pagosa Springs Outlaw Snowdown may remember him as guitarist for the Texas band, Mickey & the Motorcars.
