Next Best Comic Comedy Showcase
SUMMER COMEDY SERIES TO CULMINATE IN FESTIVAL
Local Comedy Scene is No Joke
First, at 7PM you get to decide the winner of the ‘Next Best Comic of the Four Corners’ competition. Then, stick around for the 9PM show, when New York comedian and actor, Camille Theobald takes the stage with special appearances by Allie Wolfe and Zach Abeyta. A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit the 416 Fire Relief Fund.
The first ever comedy festival is coming to Durango, along with dozens of touring comics from all over the country.
Comedy Showcase Durango has partnered with the Historic Henry Strater Theatre to fund the comedy festival through a series of live comedy shows and subsequent sponsorships over the summer. Beginning May 4, 2018, the season kicks off with stand-up like you’ve never seen at The Strater before, including the launch of a competition series called “Next Best Comic in the 4 Corners” and bringing Colorado’s Best Comedian, Nathan Lund to the stage on the same night. “Durango has a festival for everything,” says festival co-organizer Wes Stein, a traveling feature comic himself and co-founder of Comedy Showcase Durango. “Surely we can offer some live stand-up comedy at a high level.” Following shows on June 8th and July 6th, the first ever comedy fest hits Durango on August 23, 24 and 25, with a curious title: The 2nd Annual Four Corners Comedy Festival. This is because the festival’s inaugural season took place last July in Cortez, CO at the Sunflower Theatre, featuring over a dozen comics from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Jill Carlson, a Montezuma County attorney organized the original event. “We outgrew Cortez pretty quickly,” Carlson says. “It made sense to join forces with Comedy Showcase Durango because they had been producing live comedy in town for a couple of years and bringing the show to Durango seemed like the next logical step.” Now, with Carlson, Stein and production manager Justin Ginn (who takes credit for the El Rancho Tavern’s enormous success with live comedy over the past year) joined together, the first ever comedy festival in Durango seems a sure success. In August, around 50 comics will descend upon Durango, for three days, performing shows at several locations around town. The festival will benefit area non-profits too, as 10% of all tickets will be donated. “We are inside the comedy community,” Stein says. “Its very hard to book quality talent from the outside. Hopefully, we can bring Durango an amenity like its never had before.”
